Andreas Holzinger leads the Human-Centered AI Lab (HCAI), Medical University Graz, and is since 2019 a visiting professor at the XAI Lab of Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. Andreas pioneered in interactive machine learning with the human-in-the-loop. For his achievements, he was elected a member of Academia Europea in 2019, the European Academy of Science, and as a member of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) in 2020. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in domains that impact human life (agriculture, climate, forestry, health) has led to an increased demand for trustworthy AI. Andreas is working together with his group on generic methods to promote robustness and explainability to foster secure AI solutions and advocates a synergistic approach to provide human control over AI and to align AI with human values, ethical principles, and legal requirements to ensure privacy, security, and safety.

Andreas Holzinger obtained a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from Graz University in 1998, and his second Ph.D. in Computer Science from Graz University of Technology in 2003. Andreas was Visiting Professor for Machine Learning & Knowledge Extraction in Verona (Italy), RWTH Aachen (Germany), University College London, and Middlesex University London (UK). Since 2016 Andreas is Visiting Professor for Machine Learning in Health Informatics at the Faculty of Informatics at Vienna University of Technology.
