This work is about the design, development and empirical evaluation of a novel mobile museum guide that supports gamified exhibit recognition and social encounters of visitors at the Kyveli Institute, a theatrical cultural institution in Hermoupolis, Syros. It has been conducted within the framework of a Diploma Thesis, after accepting an invitation from the director of the aforementioned institution prompting a collaboration with Department of Product and System Design Engineering. The mobile guide app provides three primary functionalities: a) audio guide with storytelling and background music, b)a gamified, exploratory experience with exhibit recognition / scanning for ten exhibits, and c) visitors’ social encounters: concurrent scanning of common favorite exhibit to unlock together extra content in the app. Results from empirical evaluation in the field with the participation of nine experts suggest that the app offers a unique, captivating guiding experience in small-sized exhibitions with user-friendly interactions.
